Individual Coverage

Medical bills can be very costly so it’s important to know how you can protect your personal health and assets. Individual coverage is available to those who do not have access to an employer sponsored plan or do not participate in one. It is also available for your dependents should your employer not cover them as well. Individuals are able to enroll during the annual open enrollment period with rates that are based on an individual’s age and where they live.

Open Enrollment

  • Open enrollment is a set time period during which people can purchase health insurance for the upcoming year.

  •  November 1st through Dec 15th is the regular Open Enrollment period.

    .

  • In order to enroll in individual coverage outside of Open Enrollment, you must have a qualifying event.

  • The enrollment period for the state marketplace (Covered California) typically ends on January 31.

Special Enrollment

The only way to buy an insurance plan outside of open enrollment is to qualify for special enrollment. The following exceptions allow you to apply for health insurance outside of regular open enrollment.
  • Losing your job

  • Moving to a new state

  • Getting married or divorced

  • Becoming a widow or widower

  • Aging off your parent’s plan

  • Having a new baby

Things You Should Know

  • You are not eligible for special enrollment if you lost your previous health plan because you failed to pay your monthly premiums or if you voluntarily cancelled your coverage.

  • If you have access to an employer sponsored health plan, you will not be eligible to receive a premium tax credit.

  • There are several carriers that do not offer individual medical plans in the state of California. We can direct you to the ones that do!
